The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.

-Maya Angelou

Not all of us have a family when buying our first home. Some people still in their mid-twenties can have the financial resources to buy a decent home but don't have any idea on where to start since buying a home is a one-time investment (unless you’re a multi-millionaire or run a real estate company). Here are some tips that might be helpful if you fall in this category:

1. Find an Agent

Hiring an agent might sound like an expensive idea but one thing that is for certain is that they know exactly what you’re searching for solely out of experience. Trying to save a small portion of money might result costly if you try to buy your first home yourself as a rookie.

2. Research

As with most things, research is a mandatory step that you must do before buying anything. You can check property rates on real estate websites and easily gain knowledge that would have been impossible to learn in a world without internet. Use your resources and spend at least a month researching houses in the market.

3. Keep Your Finance in Check

You must understand that buying a house is a huge investment as well as a long-term commitment. Are you financially stable to be able to afford a house, let alone invest in repairs, instalments and decorations? It’s better to be safe than sorry!

4. Consult with New Homeowners

Do a little digging in your own circles and figure out which relatives, friends or family members have recently purchased a house. Ask them for advice and they will happily offer it to you as they will still be in the transition to figuring things out regarding their house. Consulting with other people helps you filter exactly the type of home you want.

5. Make a Reasonable Offer

Some houses in the market are ridiculously overpriced and you might be a victim to such sellers. However, you must not undermine the value of a house just for the sake of bargaining. Be informed about what to expect from a particular house and make an informed offer without offending the seller and at the same time acting like a smart agent.
